Gander Concert Day
After an entertaining pub session last night we were up and on the bus by 10:30 this morning. We have been lucky the last two days to have sleep ins. That won’t be happening again for a while.
What a fabulous day we have had in Gander Newfoundland. We have been so warmly welcomed by our hosts at St. Martn’s Anglican. However, before we even got to the church we had a great time with two locals.
Marion, our tour director, arranged to have us meet, at the airport, with the Deputy Mayor of Gander, Bettina and then Oz. Oz was the chief con stable in Gander the day the 7000 people dropped in to visit. If you have seen the play about how Gander responded to the 911 diversion of aircraft, you may know about Oz. He recounted the day and many touching stories of the time. He had us fascinated, in tears and laughing. He’s a great story teller.
After out visit with to the airport we rushed on back for lunch and then headed for the church. We cannot say enough about the marvellous group of folks that we worked with to organize this concert. We have had several zoom meetings over the course of a year. We had loads of laughs with them during these meetings. When we arrived we got hugs as if we were long time friends.
The concert was well attended by 200 or so folks from the area. The church choir joined us for two songs and a quintet of young women sang for as well. These young ladies had fantastic voices and were well received.
Tonight we had dinner together at the hotel and are off to bed to ready ourselves for an early start tomorrow. We are off to Twillingate to see icebergs and possibly whales.
