Clarenville Concert
Concert
We arrived at the Clarenville Pentecostal Church this evening to setup and found a very beautiful space with good acoustics and a very welcoming congregation. After sorting out where we all needed to stand and have a microphone check we headed over tho the Catholic Church across the street,
We were treated to more Newfoundland hospitality and a super meal. homemade pasta dish, salads, and homemade delicious cake. There were prizes of local preserves and candy if you had a special mark under your plate. What lovely people who thought of everything to make us feel welcome.
The concert went off without a hitch. The audience greeted us afterwards with many compliments. Our non singing tour folks told us it was our best concert to date. It was our third concert so imagine what the fifth will sound like.
Clarenville is a town on the east coast of Newfoundland that was incorporated in 1951.
The population is relatively small, numbering only about 6,300, however Clarenville is growing
slowly while the overall population of Newfoundland is shrinking..
Ship building was a big industry in town, starting in 1942, but now it is only a small part of the
economy. The making of asphalt and creosote are also local industries along with agriculture.
Additionally, Clarenville is known for its beaches and beautiful shoreline, therefore tourism is
now a big draw to the community.
The church community in Clarenville is very active and from what I have gathered they all work
together and share their resources for the good of the community. Another thing is that
pastors and priests from various congregations all over the area where we will be singing from
St Johns to Eastport all seem to be on a first name basis and are willing to share equipment like
risers and keyboards.
Calvary Pentecostal church has been active in Clarenville for 75 years. They started in one
woman’s house, and kept on moving to larger and larger buildings as the congregation grew.
The present church building, where we will be singing, is relatively new, is very modern and
brightly lit. The sanctuary seats 200 people. Calvary Pentecostal shares a parking lot with Our
Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, and our dinner will be there, as Calvary does not have the
space for all 44 of us.
Calvary has a history of holding concerts, and they have a grand piano and all of the equipment
necessary for our concert. Unlike most churches, they are doing quite well financially, and
decided that money raised from our concert would go to the local food bank and to a Summer
lunch program for children sponsored by the church.
The Pastor is Reverend Andrew Ball, and his wife, Julia is the youth minister. Together they run
this church and put together an ambitious number of programs for the community.
We should have a unique experience in Clarenville.
